It is with a heavy heart that we said goodbye to Starswept’s Jamaica Me Crazy aka Lucy. We have been blessed to share her life for over 15 years. And although saying goodbye is so very sad, I am reminded of how fulfilling her life has been. And how fortunate we are to have had her in our lives.
When we decided that we would get an Australian Shepherd, we did a fair amount of research to find a breeder that fit our style. And when we made the trip to “go see” the litter we knew that we were looking for a pet and a show dog. What we did not plan on was finding two- yes 2 puppies that we just could not say no to! Lucy won Sarah’s heart, and Desi stole mine. And the rest was history. They were not litter mates but only a few days apart. And with that our dog careers started.
They were cute little fuzz buckets. So much fun. And so much work. We all dove in to the training. There was obedience training and show ring training. We were all having so much fun that Ed extended it to herding and carting. And then we added Love on a Leash-Dog Therapy. It was a dog’s life and we were all having a blast.
They allowed us to travel and meet some amazing people. We learned so much from our cute little fuzz buckets. They taught us how to do things together as a family. Training and hard work pays off. And that in the breeder’s ring- it’s subject to the judge’s decision. We learned how to be a humble winner, and a gracious loser. They taught us to care and to love unconditionally.
So in looking back over the 15 plus years that Lucy has graced our lives- we have so many wonderful memories. And so many pictures! YES pictures. (And it’s these pictures that will keep her memory with us forever! I’m just saying!) Not only pictures that we have taken, but pictures from other photographers. And Miss Lucy is on both the front and back cover of The Australian Shepherd: Champion of Versatility book.
So as hard as it was to say goodbye- (we had to say goodbye to Desi last year) we feel so very honored that they allowed us to be a part of their lives.
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE POEM
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
